A Wells Fargo customer in Texas says the bank has refused to refund his money after fraudsters siphoned $3,300 from his account through Zelle.
Ashlie Rinehart says she received a call on April 1 from a number that appeared on her caller ID as Wells Fargo, reports Fox 26 Houston.
The caller said he worked in Wells Fargo’s fraud department and told him his account had been hacked.
The caller then allegedly told Rinehart to enter a series of numbers that apparently gave the hackers access to her Zelle account. A total of $3,300 was taken in two separate transactions, according to the report.
Rinehart says she realized the call was a scam after more than an hour on the phone. She then went to a Wells Fargo branch to report the fraud and filed a report with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
Fox 26 reports that Wells Fargo denied her claims three times, telling her that they were allowing someone else to log into her Zelle account.
The station also received a statement from Zelle spokesman Eric Blankenbaker, who said scams often start through social media, online marketplaces, text messages and spam calls.
Fox 26 reports that Wells Fargo has already addressed fraud claims, but the bank remains tough when customers follow the scammers’ instructions and withdraw or send the money themselves.
