Police in Australia in New South Wales he held 52.3 Bitcoin-currently worth more than $4.2 million-during the search warrant issued in Ingleburn on May 4, which shows what Detective Superintendent Matt Craft called “one of the largest crypto-currency seizures in the history of the country.”
Strike Force Andalusia was launched in September 2024 after the NSW Police Cybercrime Squad identified a cryptocurrency wallet containing large sums of money. Bitcoin which are believed to be from the black market. During the investigation, detectives executed a search warrant earlier at the Surfside home, seizing electronic equipment and approximately 7.2 grams of cocaine.
Forensic analysis of these tools found additional cryptocurrencies. A 39-year-old Ingleburn man allegedly refused to give access to his digital devices after his arrest, leading to further charges relating to money laundering and drug dealing.
The work clearly demonstrates the power of law enforcement in the investigation of cryptocurrency, according to Craft, head of the NSW State Crime Law’s Cybercrime Squad.
“Criminals operating on the darknet often believe that they are beyond the reach of law enforcement, but this study shows that this is not the case,” Craft said. “Darknet markets remain a major source of crime, and our investigators are focusing on those who use them to sell illegal goods or steal money.”
Australian authorities have prioritized the use of cryptocurrencies as the digital economy becomes increasingly important for criminal enterprises. The NSW seizure highlights the growing capabilities being developed by state cybercrime units and the Australian Federal Police to investigate transactions on the blockchain and recover illicit funds.
This technological advance challenges the long-held view of the anonymity of cryptocurrency on darknet platforms. Several recent cases in Australia have led to the seizure of millions of dollars in digital assets.
