The Department of Homeland Security’s Homeland Security Information Network has received unauthorized access that may reveal information about major events.
The platform serves as a critical tool for federal, state and local agencies to coordinate emergency responses and share intelligence.
The incident was a first report and Nextgov, which received a statement from DHS.
“The Department of Homeland Security is aware of recent incidents involving the sharing of anonymous historical data. We immediately took steps to isolate the affected systems, mitigate risk, and initiate a forensic investigation.”
Democratic Senator Mark R. Warner, who is the Vice Chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, said printed comments on the event.
“I am deeply concerned by the recent revelations about the inconsistency of DHS’s Homeland Security Information Network (HSIN). For more than two decades, the HSIN platform has been used by federal, state, local, Tribal, territorial law enforcement, and private agencies, to share intelligence, plan, coordinate, and collaborate on events…,
The content of the HSIN, although not classified, is highly publicized, and its disclosure puts national security at risk. DHS and DOJ must thoroughly investigate who breached the HSIN, what the attackers discovered, and ensure that all DHS partners are provided with timely information and the necessary tools to mitigate any threats that may arise from the breach.
In addition, DHS must take a serious look and account for how this happened and make sure that this type of violation never happens again. Homeland security officials need to be confident that the information contained in the HSIN is secure, and the American public needs to be confident that America’s cybersecurity department has its own building. “
