A Florida man has pleaded guilty to stealing thousands of dollars from bank customers across the US by pretending to be a fraud investigator.
US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of California he says Albert Guerra, who lives in Miramar, Florida, pleaded guilty to defrauding national banks along with his accomplices. Guerra’s plan was to first obtain information about a bank customer and then call them under the pretense of investigating fraud.
“He encouraged the victims to take money and give it to the alleged bankers – who were the drivers Guerra sent to take money from the victims and return it to him.”
Since most of his victims were elderly, Guerra often told the drivers he hired to collect the money he sent them to pick up documents from his grandmother, according to the US Attorney’s office for the Southern District of California.
While Guerra is a Florida resident, details of his plea deal show he defrauded victims on the West Coast of more than $170,000. In October 2025, Guerra stole $136,300 from three victims who lived in different areas of San Diego, California. Three days after the trio’s robbery, Guerra spent $24,000 on a Tesla Model 3 in Las Vegas.
In northern Oregon, Guerra stole $40,000 from one victim.
Guerra, who pleaded guilty to bank fraud and money laundering in late March, is expected to be sentenced in June.
