A health care company has agreed to pay millions of dollars to settle a lawsuit over a data breach that exposed patient information.
According to the Settlement Administrator’s portalEssen Medical Associates has agreed to pay $4 million to settle a lawsuit filed after hackers gained access to the New York health care network.
The data breach affected 907,782 current or former patients.
“(Essen’s) investigation found that an unauthorized actor accessed some of Essen’s computers between March 14, 2023, and March 22, 2023, and may have accessed or copied some of the data stored on Essen’s premises…
The content of the affected files varies from person to person, and includes, as the case may be, names of individuals, Social Security number, driver’s license or national identification number, US Alien Registration number, non-US identification number, passport number, date of birth, diagnosis, health insurance account information, lab results, medical history, hospital number, medical treatment, patient account number, patient information, hospital and/or physician number.
Members of the Settlement class are eligible to receive up to $5,000 for written losses incurred as a result of the data breach.
Another $100 cash payment will also be offered, while members of regular groups will not be required to provide proof of losses.
The deadline to object to the establishment is May 4. Applications must be submitted by June 1st. The final court case in this matter is set for July 7.
