- Chaos Labs is stepping down from its position as Aave’s threat manager after more than three years, citing governance issues and conflicts of interest.
- Founder Omer Goldberg said the split reflects a major disagreement with Aave Labs on how risk should be monitored as Aave V4 expands the scope of the protocol.
Chaos Labs is leaving Aave, and it’s no small feat to move quietly. He is responsible for the biggest risk of the protocol and leaving the middle of the governance breakdown that has caused some of the contributors to exit.
In a post published on Monday, Chaos Labs founder Omer Goldberg he said the decision was not made lightly, but the engagement with Aave did not reflect how his team believed that risk should be managed. He said that Aave Labs acted professionally and supported the big budget, but the two sides were far apart on the way forward.
The development of V4 increases the distribution of risk
Goldberg cited three reasons for leaving. First, he said that the engagement was not profitable. Second, he mentioned about BGD Labs’ latest departure is the Aave Chan Initiativetwo other sponsors who have already announced exits in the same major debate. Thirdly, and most importantly, he explained the fundamental misunderstandings with Aave Labs in risk management as. Aave V4 extends the design and flexibility of the protocol.
This last point is more important than the budget issue. Aave V4 is not just another custom upgrade. It changes the nature of the protocol, and this makes security compromises more difficult.
Aave loses another user
The departure adds that Aave’s internal structure has changed. BGD Labs, which helped develop key parts of the protocol, previously said it would withdraw on April 1. Marc Zeller’s Aave Chan Initiative also announced plans to back down amid governance disputes.
For Aave, the next challenge is to move on. Risk management doesn’t get much attention until it’s over, and the capital markets don’t have an obscure place there. As V4 approaches, the system now has one less hand in the room.
