Wells Fargo customers have lost thousands of dollars to thieves posing as bank fraud investigators.
It all started when an unnamed woman received a text message in January 2025 about an attempted fraudulent purchase at Walmart, reports Coral Springs news.
The buyer declined the purchase, but received a call from the same number from a person identified as a Wells Fargo investigator.
He told him that there was a government fraud investigation into his managers and accountants, and that he needed to do something to protect the money in his account.
A Wells Fargo auditor told him to go to his local branch, take the money out of his checking account and put it into another Wells Fargo account to protect his money. The fraudster gave the woman a credit card number to deposit the money.
The victim went to a Wells Fargo branch and deposited $19,460 into her credit card account.
Shortly after the incident, the victim allegedly “felt strange” and returned to her branch to speak to staff. Employees told him there was no government investigation, and he realized he had been duped.
Local police were able to kill one of the suspected fraudsters, 26-year-old Samarah Comrie, who is now facing charges of robbery. Investigators say they discovered that the debit card the victim transferred her money to was allegedly in Comrie’s name.
