- Aave has seen more than $5.4 billion in ETH removed after Kelp DAO rsETH exploited fear of bad debt on the protocol.
- The volume of outflows pushed Aave’s ETH usage rate to 100%, leaving the available funds exhausted.
Spirit is facing a huge loss of confidence after Kelp DAO rsETH lost in the trading market and triggered a rush to exit.
According to Lookonchain, the attacker used rsETH as collateral to withdraw The price of ETH from the protocol, leaving Aave vulnerable to bad debts and triggering the threat of expropriation of the whale. In total, more than $5.4 billion in ETH is said to have left the platform as users moved quickly to reduce risk.
Nangumi has made his money back quickly
A brilliant move came from Justin Sunwho withdrew 65,584 ETH, worth about $154 million, from Aave. That departure, in itself, was hugely impressive. But it was really part of a much bigger plan.
When the main shareholders took the money, the effect on the ETH market of Aave was immediate. The protocol utilization rate hit 100%, meaning that all the ETH that was borrowed was successfully taken. At that time, it was no longer a matter of exploitation. It became an economic phenomenon.
That difference is important. In DeFia protocol can survive a single use more easily than it can survive a massive loss of user confidence that drains the database faster than the system can be installed.
The rsETH incident highlighted the known weakness of DeFi
What seems to have disrupted the market the most was the possibility that the collateral tied to rsETH could not cover the ETH that had already been released. That’s where bad credit comes into the conversation, and once it happens, lenders tend to move before they wait for a better understanding.
Aave’s WETH reserve, one of the largest pools in the protocol, now reflects a market in crisis. The reserve size remains high, but the available funds have decreased significantly.
For Aave, the challenge ahead is to restore confidence in the ETH side of the market before the fear turns into something permanent. The protocol still has scope, widespread use and a large base. But as use increases and whales begin to outgrow their size, the scale can feel like a safety net and a reason why the shock moves so fast.
