A Michigan man lost $37,000 after being scammed by criminals posing as tech support and bank representatives.
Steven Cooke of Plymouth says the scam started on March 20, when a pop-up warning appeared on his laptop saying his system had crashed, reports NBC-Affiliate WDIV Local 4.
Someone who identified herself as Veronica J. Wilson said she was connected to gangs and urged her to take immediate action.
At that point a second person joined the call, claiming to be JPMorgan Chase by the name of Richard Lee.
The impersonator told Mr Cooke that money had been withdrawn from his account and told him to withdraw the money by withdrawing cash and depositing it in a Bitcoin ATM.
Despite growing doubts, Cooke eventually invested $37,000.
The scam was only resolved after the fraudsters forced her to withdraw some money, which led to her contacting the real bank.
Cooke has reported the matter to authorities including the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
