Law enforcement officials have arrested at least 276 people following a global crackdown targeting fraud sites involved in cryptocurrency scams.
In his words, the US Department of Justice he says that the cooperation between the FBI, the Dubai Police Department and the Ministry of Defense of China led to the collapse of at least nine crypto sites in the United States.
Among those arrested is Burmese national Thet Min Nyi, who is believed to be the manager and recruiter for the Ko Thet company that allegedly ran several fraud sites. The joint operation also led to the arrest of Indonesians Wiliang Awang, Andreas Chandra and Lisa Mariam. All four were indicted on federal fraud and money laundering charges in San Diego on April 29.
The DOJ said the defendants worked and recruited others to work for Ko Thet, Sanduo Group and Giant Company, which they say are linked to crypto scams that operate in pig-killing, a type of fraud that involves gaining the trust of victims before tricking them into spending their money on fake products.
Said Assistant Attorney General A. Tysen Duva of the Department of Justice’s Criminal Division,
“Criminals who target Americans from abroad cannot operate with impunity, regardless of where they live in the world. The trial and arrests announced today demonstrate the global consensus that corrupt practices are unacceptable anywhere and must be eradicated.”
