A former billionaire banker has been jailed for years for missing thousands of dollars from the bank account of an ailing septuagenarian.
According to to the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Rhode Island, former Santander Bank employee Carlos Bras allegedly misappropriated $125,000 in or about May 2023 from the account of a 78-year-old client who had dementia.
In order to obtain and transfer the victim’s money, Bras secretly assisted the septuagenarian user’s internet banking. Bras “also ordered checks to be sent to addresses he controlled, and took a debit card to use them.”
According to the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Rhode Island, Bras also initiated several transactions without the consent or authorization of the account owner, “including transfers to his wife’s account, and several wire transfers to a bank account in Portugal.”
At the time, the 78-year-old Santander Bank customer, who lived in an assisted living facility, had a Massachusetts court-appointed guardian.
Bras, who previously pleaded guilty to grand larceny and mail fraud, will be sentenced to prison on September 15th.
“He (Bras) faces a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison for mail fraud, and a consecutive two years in prison for aggravated robbery.”
Delaware-headquartered Santander Bank is the 28th-largest lender in the US with over $97 billion in domestic assets.
