Google Pays $8,250,000 to Settle Lawsuit for Collecting Personal Information of Children Under 13 Without Parental Permission


An $8.25 million settlement is on the table amid allegations that tech titan Google violated children’s privacy rights.

In a 2023 class action lawsuit filed in the Northern District of California, the plaintiffs. to say that Google LLC and AdMob Google Inc. collected, used and disclosed information about children under the age of 13 using Google Play applications without parental consent.

The plaintiffs also claim that Google collected and used data for advertising in violation of state and federal laws, including the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).

Members include US residents under the age of 13 at any time between April 1, 2015, and those who have downloaded or used an app from Google Play.

A settlement of $8.25 million will do so screen the cost of attorneys’ fees, financial management, class-action service awards and other expenses. The remaining amount will be distributed to the eligible on a pro-rata basis.

Google denies any wrongdoing and has said it decided to settle to avoid the costs and risks of the trial.

Applications must be submitted online or by email by September 14th, with the deadline for withdrawal or objection on August 4th. Final approval is expected on September 24.
