Americans cite losing their jobs as their biggest fear about artificial intelligence (AI), while curing diseases like cancer tops their hopes, according to an Anthropic survey of nearly 52,000 people.
The findings highlight the gap between what people want from AI and what they fear, such as the actual removal and political pressure on automation in the United States.
Job Loss Above All Other AI Fears
Anthropic surveyed 51,993 Americans by the end of 2025 for its first public record survey. Job loss is the top fear at 64%, leading in all countries.
Concern ranged from 71% in Iowa to 57% in Mississippi. He led among Democrats at 67% and Republicans at 62%.
“Americans with a college degree are about 10 percent more likely to worry about losing their jobs than those with a high school education or less,” the study found. “At the same time, people who use AI at work every day are less worried about losing their jobs compared to those who don’t use AI at all: 54% versus 70%.

Cognitive trust is followed at 56%, followed by false trust at 52%. Only 15% of Americans said they trust AI companies to lead technology. According to their findings,
“This was the lowest number for any organization we tested, below the federal government (20%), state and local governments (19%), and international organizations (20%), and the least independent experts (43%).
AI Layoffs and Billionaire Pushback
The fear is not new. BeInCrypto said that AI cut 38,579 US jobs in May, about 40% of the month’s total.
For 2026, employers have built 87,714 jobs in AI. This number is already more than 54,836 which is called technology in 2025 as a whole.
The pressure is on in Washington. Senators Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders have them urged Congress to protect workers now.
Not everyone agrees. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos refuses the issue of job loss, predicting that AI will create unemployment instead. Bezos made the case when his AI startup, Prometheus, raised $12 billion at a valuation of $41 billion.
“Many people who, for example, today have two-income families, maybe one of those earners will choose not to be in the labor market, so they will be a two-income family,” said Bezos.
Americans Want Cure and Accountability
On the optimistic side, 48% put curing diseases like cancer or Alzheimer’s in their top three uses for AI. Helping people with disabilities follows at 36%.
Administrative support increased dramatically. 71% of respondents I want government involvement in AI, including 79% of Democrats and 68% of Republicans.
When asked how to continue the development of AI in the interests of society, 47% support companies that are legally responsible for harm. Another 44% want security to be prioritized over growth.
Anthropic plans to replicate the Anthropic Public Record as AI adoption continues to grow. Early reading shows that people are willing to take action but are skeptical about the companies that make it.
