Hundreds of thousands of Americans are being warned about a data breach at financial services firm Hightower Holding.
In the report sending to the Maine Attorney General, the Chicago-based company says user information was compromised, leading to access to its computers in early January.
An investigation later determined that some files were downloaded without permission that contained personal and confidential information, including names, Social Security numbers and driver’s license numbers.
The filing shows that 131,483 people were affected by the incident, including 1,557 Maine residents.
The breach was discovered on March 12, 2026 and affected parties were notified on March 23, 2026.
According to the statement, Hightower identified the compromised account that caused unauthorized access to its network on January 9, 2026, and a subsequent investigation found that files were improperly downloaded between January 8 and January 9, 2026.
