Austria has asked the EU to investigate hosting Anthropic within Europe, weeks after Washington banned the high-tech company’s foreign operations.
Secretary of State for Digitalization Alexander Pröll presented the idea in a letter to the European Commission. He admitted that he could not say how the plan would work.
Europe’s Quest for Anthropic Reception
Pröll sent the letter to European Commission Vice President Henna Virkkunen. He added that Europe is in danger of being pushed out of the AI frontier unless it acts now.
In his own letterPröll called on the member states to try for a bigger share.

His proposals undermined incentives such as legal certainty, new currency, and access to the European single market. He did not provide funding, timelines, or construction plans, and acknowledged that skeptics would doubt whether the idea would work.

US Curbs That Caused Appeals
Washington implemented this on June 12. The Department of Commerce issued export guidelines for the two most powerful types of companies. It banned any foreign nationals, even non-citizen Anthropic workers.
