Vitalik’s Lean Ethereum Roadmap Captures a Timely Pushback

Vitalik Buterin described Lean Ethereum, a major overhaul that he calls the third major change after the Merger. The upgrade will take place every three to four years, affecting almost every part of the protocol.

Buterin shared the plan through a public map called strawmap, written by the Ethereum Foundation. He said almost every major sector would be replaced, calling the effort ambitious but risky.

Changes in the value of Lean Ethereum

Recursive STARKs are centered. A cryptographic proof system would verify the chain instead of forcing each node to use it again. Buterin wants these references to be written as a main part of the protocol.

Quantum security is also high on the list. This roadmap transforms cryptography into a sophisticated hash machine that is designed to accelerate massive computing. The change coincides with NIST, the US standards organization that completed its first measurements of quantum encryption in 2024.

The most disruptive change focuses on how Ethereum stores data. Buterin would keep the current core protocol architecture very much. They have added a new type of restriction that reaches 100 TB by 2030.

Rewriting an ERC-20 token or a non-fungible token (NFT) in that format can reduce the payout by more than 10x. Complex programs like standard exchanges may not exist.

Privacy becomes a higher goal, not just an afterthought, to develop Buterin’s secret push. The time is approaching, the an extension of Glamsterdam they should raise the gas limit.

Buterin has reason to believe. The 2022 merger moved Ethereum to proof of value and reduced its energy consumption by 99%. It is deployed with minimal disruption to users or applications.

“But make no mistake, this IS the third major Ethereum component in the same way that Merge was the second,” Vitalik Buterin. to explain.

Not Everyone Buys Timeline

The plan quickly backfired, not just for outsiders. Dankrad Feist praised the vision but called it three or four years too late. The data mining project of the Ethereum Foundation gave dankharding its name.

“The full certainty of STF and reaching the last Gigagas in a few seconds makes me happy! But 3-4 years is too late… I think we should be willing to do it within a year. I think this is possible now with LLMs,” Dankrad Feist he encouraged.

His belief in AI is not limited. The same map takes into account human development and acknowledges that rapid AI research can force time.

Others were more cautious. Others urged the Foundation to cut back, replying that indifference would only lead to non-delivery.

His actions are useful. Updates arrive weeks after a Leaner Ethereum Foundation cut about 20% of its staff, or 54 positions. It has also moved to a smaller, matching gift budget.

The strawmap it remains a list, not a schedule. Buterin said the upcoming Hegotá fork is the last before the Lean era begins.

Ether (ETH) is down almost 41% in 2026 to around $1,760. Meanwhile, its market value it shows the market is waiting for a delivery, not a promise.
