Three Russians Charged with Supporting $62,000,000 Cybercrime Scheme Targeting Americans.

The US Department of Justice (DOJ) is indicting three Russian nationals and two companies for their role in a cybercrime that extorted millions of dollars from victims.

The DOJ he says charged Alexander Alexandrovich Volosovik, Kirill Andreevich Zatolokin, Yulia Vladimirovna Pankova, Medialand LLC and ML.Cloud LLC with conspiracy to commit and aiding and abetting computer fraud, wire fraud, wire fraud and money laundering.

Prosecutors say the two Russian companies provided cyber tools that helped cybercriminals carry out malware, ransomware and other computer threats.

According to the decision, Medialand LLC, of Volosovik, and ML.Cloud, which at that time owned Pankova, was in St. Petersburg, Russia, and provides computer servers and other Internet services.

Officials said Medialand also used infrastructure in several other countries, including China, Finland, the Netherlands and the United States.

Critics say the companies offer “bulletproof hosting”, a type of infrastructure designed to help customers commit cybercrimes while making it harder for law enforcement to detect and disrupt their work.

The lawsuit alleges that these types of businesses knowingly sell or rent their services to cybercriminals.

Officials say Volosovik promoted the company’s work in court, highlighting potential benefits for people involved in cybercrime.

Prosecutors allege that Medialand and ML.Cloud provided criminal clients with the tools they needed to infect victims’ computers with malware and ransomware, and then demanded payment in cash or cryptocurrency.

The companies also allegedly supported illegal markets, helped register fraudulent domains and provided tools used to commit fraud and abuse.

According to the decision, the terrorist groups using Medialand and ML.Cloud targeted 42 people in 21 US states.

Said Assistant Attorney General A. Tysen Duva of the Department of Justice’s Criminal Division,

“From their locations abroad, these defendants have run a series of terrorist attacks that have unleashed terrorist attacks across our country. Their actions put the American people at risk. We will continue to disrupt these networks and protect our dangerous weapons against cybercriminals at home and abroad.”
