An 86-year-old man in New Kent, Virginia, says he lost a lot of money to a scammer pretending to work at Wells Fargo.
Edith Minor he says A quick warning popped up on his computer, saying that a hacker was trying to access his account.
Young says he called a number, which he believed was an authorized Wells Fargo line. According to Minor, the fraudster tricked him into withdrawing his money so that he could be safe from the criminals.
“So he said, ‘I want you to go down to your bank to get your money, and we’re going to put it in a (safe deposit box), and we’re going to try to prevent hackers from getting into your account.’
She says the scammer called her several times, leading her to withdraw $11,500 from her checking and savings accounts. Young says she also bought gift cards at Publix and Lowe’s and shared phone numbers with the scammer.
Young says he noticed something was wrong when the scammer asked him to take out a loan.
He said, ‘I want you to go to your bank, and I want you to borrow $5,000.’ (That’s) a red flag.”
When she called Wells Fargo, Minor says the bank told her that her account showed no suspicious activity, but by then she had already lost $11,500.
