Subscribers to California’s auto-edited YouTube TV are poised to take part in a multibillion-dollar lawsuit in response to claims the service didn’t comply with state disclosure laws.
Google LLC and YouTube LLC agreed to a $7.5 million offer to solve claims not consistent with California’s statute of limitations.
The lawsuit was filed because the companies allegedly failed to provide necessary information when selling YouTube TV subscriptions.
The complaint alleges that the violations occurred through YouTube’s charges for subscriptions renewed between February 1, 2017, and October 29, 2021, when the students resided in California.
Excluded are subscribers who paid for YouTube TV via iOS phones from the Apple App Store, YouTube TV subscriptions that were canceled during the free trial and YouTube TV subscriptions that received a full refund.
Eligible members who signed up and paid for one renewal during that period can receive an average of $92.26 pro rata.
Appeals must be filed by August 30, 2026, and final approval will be issued on October 15, 2026. Those wishing to opt out of the decision may do so by 11:59 pm Pacific Time on or before August 30, 2026.
Payment will be made approximately 105 days after final approval.
Google and YouTube deny the claims but agreed to settle the claims “to avoid burdensome and expensive litigation.”
