137,976 People Warned After Credit Breach – Personal and Financial Risk Factors


A California mortgage lender is urging its customers to take steps to protect the company.

In a statement, Plaza Home Mortgage said an unauthorized group gained access to a computer on or around February 17, which allowed the attackers to access the company’s information.

The Plaza reportedly took immediate action to shut down the attack after security officials alerted it to the intrusion.

Investigations conducted following the incident indicate that the breach may have exposed customer information, including names, addresses, social security numbers, dates of birth, driver’s licenses, government information and information related to housing and employment.

“The personal information obtained was not the same for every individual and does not include all of the above.”

According to the data breach notice has been sent and the Maine Attorney General’s office, which was discovered on March 3 and compromised the personal information of 137,976 people.

Plaza is offering victims 12 months of free credit monitoring and identity theft services.

“(W)e encourage you to carefully monitor your financial accounts and if you notice any unauthorized activity, you should contact your financial institution immediately. To protect yourself from the possibility of theft, we encourage you to place a fraud alert on your credit files.”
