Aave V3’s Wrapped Ether (WETH) repository is in bad debt after criminals exploited KelpDAO’s rsETH token and used it as collateral to borrow money.
Solidity developer and investor 0xQuit revealed the situation on X, warning investors that the WETH pool is depleted and that partial withdrawals will only be possible after Aave’s Umbrella backstop resolves the deficit.
How Dumping rsETH Created Bad Credit for Aave
Success started with the threat money wallets through Tornado Cash. About 116,500 rETH was dumped in KelpDAOamounting to 290 million dollars.
The attacker offered the stolen rsETH as collateral on Aave V3 and borrowed a large volume of WETH against it.
Because rsETH became immobile after the leak, the place it came from is invalid. This to the left of Aave after working for WETH it cannot be cured by normal liquidation.
“I wish I had better news, but it looks like WETH on aave is hard. Leave if you can but it’s too late,” he warned 0xQuit, Solidity developer and developer.
The rsETH markets on Aave V3 and Aave V4 have been closed, with Aave confirming that contracts were not used as this event was related to rsETH.
“Freezing the rsETH markets prevents new deposits and borrowings from RSETH while the situation is under review. We are reviewing the details of the rsETH loans on Aave that occurred after the use… he said.
What Umbrella Means for WETH Investors
Aave’s Umbrella system, which will replace the Security Module at the end of 2025, was designed for this purpose.
Users who posted on WETH in An umbrella room fighting to make up for the deficit.
After the cutting operation is completed, the remaining WETH should get a chance to withdraw.
However, full recovery is not guaranteed, and depositors they can face haircuts at their place.
This episode marks the ultimate real-world test of Umbrella Automated bad credit Learning. It also raises new questions about the risks of whitelisting liquid restaking tokens as collateral in lending protocols.
Meanwhile, the Upshift team, which is offering storage rooms, has assured its users that they have no exposure to rsETH.
“We are contacting KelpDAO about how to use rsETH. As a precaution, the Kelp team has decided to temporarily suspend deposits and withdrawals from the High Growth ETH and Kelp Gain vaults while their investigation is underway. Upshift USDC, Core USDC and EarnAUSD vaults have zero exposure to KeTH.” he wrote Upshift.
