A U.S. federal court has officially ordered Anthropic to settle a $1.5 billion settlement with thousands of authors over allegations that the AI company used copyrighted books without permission to help train the Claude chatbot. The ruling makes it the largest known copyright settlement in US history. It is also the country’s first major AI copyright case to be finally settled.
Court Approves Landmark AI Copyright Agreement
On July 20, US District Judge Araceli Martinez-Olguin given final approval of the decision in the San Francisco District Court. The judge rejected arguments that the wages were too low.
The case began in 2024, when a group of authors accused Anthropic of using fraudulent copies of their books to teach Claude, its main language model. Anthropic, which is backed by Amazon and Alphabet, has denied wrongdoing. However, it agreed to a settlement after a lengthy trial.
According to Anthropic, more than 91% of qualified authors and publishers have already claimed their share of the marketing costs.
Why Anthropic Had to Pay
A major change occurred in June 2025, when a court ruled that teaching AI to copyrighted books is a fair use under US copyright law.
However, the judge also found that Anthropic stored more than 7 million counterfeit books in a central digital library. This library is not used for training AI. That illegal storage was ruled a violation of copyright law and became the basis for damages.
Without a settlement, Anthropic faced a lawsuit where damages could have reached hundreds of billions of dollars.
The Greatest Sound Restoration in History
Attorney General Justin Nelson called the deal a “historic settlement,” saying it represented the largest copyright restoration ever recorded.
The court also approved $101 million in attorneys’ fees. The amount was less than the $187.5 million originally requested after a review of the legal work involved.
Some authors protested the decision, saying that the compensation was too low or that other copyright holders were not included. Judge Martinez-Olguin rejected those arguments. He said the agreement reflects the risks both sides face if the case goes to trial.
More AI Copyright Wars Ahead
Although the case has been settled, Anthropic’s legal troubles are far from over. Other authors and publishers pulled out of the deal and are pursuing separate copyright lawsuits against the company.
The lawsuit is one of several ongoing lawsuits between AI developers and their owners. So, it’s a great example as the courts continue to explain how copyrighted material can be legally used to teach intellectual property.
