A former bank employee stole thousands of dollars from two elderly customers and then tried to press charges against them, the US Federal Bureau of Investigation said.
Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) he says Hailee T. Ray illegally transferred money from an elderly customer’s account while working as a stockbroker at Herring Bank in Amarillo, Texas.
“Between November 15, 2021, and December 30, 2021, the respondent made nine withdrawals from the accounts of two elderly customers.”
The sales totaled $39,950.
When the elderly customer noticed on January 12, 2022 that there were unauthorized items in their account, they contacted the bank. The bank investigated the matter and found that Ray was responsible for the missing money.
When asked about the incident, Ray said the elderly customers withdrew the money through the bank’s service. However, when the bank reviewed the security it revealed that there were no vehicles on the crossing at the time.
On January 21, 2022, the bank returned the stolen money. Ray was fired from the bank on January 25, 2022, and in March 2022 the bank teller was charged with theft.
In August 2023, Ray pleaded guilty to a second count of theft over $30,000, less than $150,000, and a third count of elder abuse.
The FDIC has issued an injunction barring Ray from working at the bank and assessing a general penalty of $35,000 in the case.
