A bank manager has been accused of stealing more than $150,000 from several customers’ accounts, forcing his boss to take the money.
Authorities say Zachary Reed, a 30-year-old former manager at the Brookfield branch of First National Bank, is facing 12 counts of theft and one count of forgery on suspicion of stealing money from a customer’s account. reports CBS affiliate WKBN.
In a police report, First National Bank investigators said they began making inquiries and monitoring account activity after bank customers reported theft from their accounts.
Investigators say Reed was the mastermind behind the robbery, which led to the bank’s release in January of this year.
Investigators said they contacted police in February after they first learned that $37,000 had been stolen from the bank.
But upon closer inspection, they found that $154,410 was withdrawn from 12 customer accounts in 37 transactions.
First National Bank said it reached out to affected customers to inform them of the theft. The bank also said it had to absorb the losses after making up for the affected customers.
Meanwhile, Reed was charged last week and pleaded not guilty at trial. The former bank chief is expected to appear in court this month.
