Media and entertainment conglomerate Disney has agreed to pay millions of dollars to settle a lawsuit brought by subscribers to three streaming platforms.
According to to the portal administrator’s portal, Disney will pay $ 50 million to settle the antitrust case that was included and presented in October 2023. he says that Disney engaged in anti-competitive practices that caused pay television viewing prices to rise by 100% in some cases.
The suit alleges that Disney used its ownership of channels that it should own, particularly ESPN, to demand that the streaming platforms be included in basic subscription packages through vehicle agreements. Because these channels come with high fees, this forces services like YouTube TV and DirecTV Stream to raise their overall prices to cover the cost.
“The lawsuit alleges that Defendant (Disney) violated federal antitrust laws and various antitrust and consumer protection laws by engaging in various activities to raise the prices of Streaming Live Pay Television (“SLPTV”) and that these actions resulted in damages to the Standing Classes.”
Disney denies any wrongdoing.
Anyone who purchased a YouTube TV or DirecTV subscription between April 1, 2019 and March 31, 2026 is eligible to file for compensation. The amount that each subscriber will receive will be determined according to the plan and will be proportional to the length of the subscriber’s subscription to YouTube TV or DirecTV.
Applications must be submitted by September 8. The funds will be sent when the court gives its final approval.
