Google has agreed to pay millions of dollars to settle a controversial lawsuit, claiming that the giant recorded people’s conversations without permission.
According to the Settlement Administrator’s portalGoogle has agreed to pay $68 million to settle a lawsuit filed following allegations that Google Assistant improperly collected, used and disclosed audio recordings, even when the user did not open the app.
The lawsuit, which was filed in the US District Court for the Northern District of California, San Jose Division, he says in which Google Assistant-enabled devices experience “false acknowledgments,” or when the device automatically starts recording conversations even if the user doesn’t use “simple words,” such as “OK Google.”
People who purchased a device made by Google, use Google Assistant or were family members of Google Assistant users in the US or its territories from May 18, 2016, through March 19, 2026, are in the class.
The $68 million settlement will be used to pay notices and administrative costs, fines, taxes, attorney’s fees, labor awards to plaintiffs and other costs. The rest of the money will be distributed among the students in the class based on their points.
Those who purchased devices made by Google will receive four points for each device, consisting of three devices. Currently, those who have used Google Assistant or who were in the household of Google Assistant users will receive one point.
Affected users can file a claim through this link portal on or before August 27th.
Google disclaims all claims and any errors or liability.
“The court did not rule in favor of the Plaintiffs or Google. Instead, both sides agreed to a Settlement. That way, both sides avoid the costs and risks of litigation, and the Settlement Class Members will receive the benefits described in this Notice, while they will receive nothing. The claims do not imply that any law has been broken or that Google did anything wrong.”
