
Ripple printed The official multi-level map on April 20, 2026, describes how the XRP Ledger will transition to post-quantum cryptography, aiming for full preparation before 2028. This plan is a direct response to Google Quantum AI research confirming that blockchain cryptography – wallet security, transaction quantum signing, key management and computing – is very difficult.
The threat does not exist today. But as Ripple says: “The risk has gone from hypothetical to credible, and the time to prepare is now essential.”

What Ripple’s Post-Quantum Roadmap Includes
The process consists of four stages:
Part 1 – which has already been put in place – is the event of the day of Quantum: if the old cryptography ends before the revolution, XRPL establishes a strict system, rejecting public private signatures and requires funds to migrate to secure quantum accounts. The migration method uses zero-based PQ credentials to verify ownership without revealing the keys.
Part 2 (H1 2026) expands the experiment with algorithms finalized by NIST, matching signature size, verification cost, sensitivity, and storage under real XRPL conditions. Engineer Denis Angell is already prototyping ML-DSA on AlphaNet. Project Eleven is developing a hybrid post-quantum signing acting based on a validator test and a Devnet wallet.
Part 3 (H2 2026) goes from unique testing to post-quantum signal flow in parallel with the elliptic curve signal available on Devnet – have software testing without disrupting the mainnet. This section also covers the basics of zero-knowledge and encryption, consistent with XRPL’s Confidential Transfers service for token use cases.
Section 4 (targeting 2028) is a complete change: a new evolution of the XRPL protocol for post-quantum cryptography, design-hardened to ensure functionality and stability. Ripple explains that it’s “not a privacy problem” at this point – the biggest risk is a breach of what works on the global network.
The cryptography team leading the project – Dr. Murat Cenk, Dr. Tamas Visegrady, Dr. Oleg Burundukov, and Dr. Aanchal Malhotra – plans for cryptographic agility: several NIST-standardized algorithms instead of a single scheme, so that the protocol can change if post-quantum standards change.

This is a very different opportunity than “we will expand.”
Fair warning: 2028 is still two years away, post-quantum cryptography at the ledger level remains stagnant in development, and a larger signature could create a real headache for a network that competes for returns.
The results of the benchmarking of Phase 2 – which is expected in H1 2026 – will be the first real-time basis for the commercial activities to be managed. Look at those Devnet numbers. Changes to the XRPL protocol it is moving rapidly on several levels at the same time, and quantitative planning is now one of the accepted ones.
