Sony, which is well-known to many consumers of PlayStation, music, and movies, has been supporting and implementing a public blockchain through Sony Block Solutions Labs since the launch of Soneium in January 2025. Soneium is Ethereum L2 supported. more than 500 million in output To date, both boast 5.4 million active wallets and more than 250 live applications.
Soneium was not conceived in Sony’s boardroom and handed over to a group of outside contractors, but was developed by Sony Block Solutions Labs, a joint venture between Sony Group Corporation and The Startale groupa blockchain company with employees from more than 20 countries.
Most of the design, construction, and software development tools related to Soneium have been led by the Startale team, with Sony bringing the brand, distribution system, and decades of successful training that audiences really want. This working relationship was strengthened earlier this year, when the Sony Innovation Fund invested an additional $13 million in Startale.
So why would Sony want blockchain?
The short answer is that Sony has spent its entire life in the company an emotional businesswhether it’s games, movies, music, movies, or cameras. These are things that people have included, and what a network like Soneium has to offer is a means of communication to take real weight, for example, fans who have a piece of what they like, producers being paid directly, digital products that travel with a person instead of being locked inside a single platform.
Nothing depends on the signal to the moon but on the digital water that already works. And because most of Web3 has been sold on fantasy rather than practicality, Sony’s reading seems to be looking for a concrete value that its existing audience can be supported without being asked to care about the underlying machine. In this case, Sota Watanabe, CEO of Startale Group, was recently quoted to say:
“Startale has been an important partner to Sony since the early days of Soneium. Our vision is to bring the world together, and Sony’s continued support strengthens our ability to provide the tools necessary to realize this vision worldwide.”
What the producers get
For the construction community, Soneium is designed to be a familiar, continuous experience Optimism’s OP Stack as part of Superchain, which means that Ethereum’s standard tools can be used without anyone else having to relearn the technology. Ecosystems also include Startale USDSC, a dollar-denominated stablecoin designed to support payments, rewards, and stability of the Soneium cross-platform program.
A larger draw, however, is harder for opponents to draw, i.e., to reach harder. Sony and Startale have created Soneium as a way to bring Web3 to Sony’s wide range of entertainment, gaming, and technology, while including such LINE Mini Apps pointing to the size of the target distribution.
For freelancers, it’s the difference between posting to an empty space and posting to an existing audience. The apps now live on the network reflect this pull, with more connected content around fans, digital integrations, intellectual property (IP) licenses, and AI-powered creative tools.
Watanabe has made this ambition clear, describing the goal as making Soneium a reality main onchain entertainment hub on Ethereum.
User experience is not driven by hype
Access is via the Startale App, which folds the wallet, Mini apps, and payment system into one screen. In addition, the program is designed to hide the usual Web3 conflicts, including wallet problems, seed words, and gas fines contact.
Finally, although it would be easy to place Soneium along with the long list of blockchain test companies that were announced with fanfare and abandoned within a year, the statistics contradict that reading, since its testnet section alone attracted about 14 million wallets. Therefore, what is being built is a long game, which is pointing where companies have been talking for years without offering (ie, bringing blockchain to people who are not already crypto-savvy).
