Spirit Airlines ceased all operations on May 2, 2026, ending 34 years of service. Rising oil prices tied to the US-Iran War cleared the carrier’s path back to profitability.
The last flight landed in Dallas just after 1 a.m. EST, and during that 3 a.m. shutdown Spirit had filed for Chapter 11 in November 2024 and in August 2025 before we were ready to file for Chapter 7.
Oil Prices From The Iran War Confused The Math

The $500 Million Bailout That Didn’t Close

Negotiations stalled as the airline burned through savings. Spirit confirmed that all flights were canceled and customers were without internet.

Up to 17,000 jobs, including contractors, are at risk from the storm. JetBlue and Frontier said they would help missing Spirit passengers by repatriating them.
Following the announcement, shares of Spirit Aviation Holdings Inc (FLYYQ) fell 40%, and were trading at $1.05 at the time of writing.
