JPMorgan Chase customers were defrauded of more than $35,000 by criminals posing as anti-fraud officials and the FBI.
Illinois resident Jennifer Lichthardt says she feels violated after criminals used a scheme to trick her into transferring $35,000 to a Chase account controlled by the criminals. reports ABC 7 Chicago.
It all started when Lichthardt answered a call that was listed on his phone as his bank account number.
Lichthardt said,
“It was the number on the back of my Chase credit card, and it said Chase Fraud Department…
They read my account number. They had a penny in my account. “
The fraudsters assured him that the FBI and Chase’s anti-fraud unit were investigating bank employees who accessed customer accounts and were supposed to transfer money to safekeeping.
He followed the scammers’ instructions and transferred $35,000 into a “Chase secured account” at his local branch and thousands of dollars to another online bank.
Fraudsters withdrew the money after it was deposited, according to the bank.
Chase says in his words,
“We urge all consumers to ignore phone, text or online requests to transfer money or to access their computer or bank accounts. Legitimate banks and companies will not make these requests, but scammers will.”
Lichthardt reported the theft to the police and hopes to recover his money.
