The mastermind of a multinational fraud scheme that defrauded victims of $1.5 million could face up to 30 years in prison without parole.
Office of the US Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan he says Nazaly Mason, who is from Maryland, was convicted of conspiracy to commit bank fraud after pleading guilty to the charges.
The 33-year-old admitted at the trial that he planned the attack. He also alleged that he provided subordinates with false documents and personally identifiable information (PII) about several victims.
Smith said he also trained his team to memorize stolen information, open bank accounts using victims’ names and deposit stolen checks into those accounts.
Citing information from the complaint agreement, CBS News reports that the plan took place between May 2022 and December 2023. One of Smith’s managers, Shannon Curriehe pleaded guilty to another count of attempted bank fraud and was convicted earlier this month.
In addition to the possible prison time, Smith also faces up to five years of parole after each prison term and a $1 million fine.
He will be sentenced before United States District Judge Mark A. Goldsmith after a report of the incident is prepared.
