New documents are making it clear that Bitcoin belongs in professional basketball arenas – and it has the potential to back it up.
Bitcoin Season, led by Mike Nicoll, follows The price of Bitcoin Swana Bitcoin asset management company, on its mission to establish a Bitcoin-only partnership within the professional basketball industry. The center of the film on Swan’s groundbreaking deal with the Cleveland Cavaliers – described as the first Bitcoin-only agreement with an NBA franchise – is a separate agreement with the Klutch Sports Group, a player organization founded by Rich Paul that represents some of the biggest names in sports.
The film frames Bitcoin not as a currency but as a tool to support players, arriving at a time when athletes continue to control their work, their business, and their money.
Former NBA guard Matthew Dellavedova, who appears in the film, called it “a process” for franchises, players, and athletes looking to change what they represent beyond the roster.
“(Bitcoin Season) shows franchises, leagues, and athletes that Bitcoin can change more than paper, it can change what you stand for and the legacy you leave. We are in a time of player-power, and being Bitcoin is part of it,” said Dellavedova.
The words of the experts in the film include Michael SaylorLyn Alden, Adam Back, Max Keiser, Pierre Rochard, Greg Foss, and Natalie Brunell, along with Cavs executives and Klutch.
The main argument of the film: when the traditional financial models are destroyed in the digital age, keeping the value in Bitcoin represents a winning strategy for athletes and organizations alike.
Nicoll is no stranger to basketball writing. His 2017 film At All Costs was acquired by Netflix and he was compared to Hoop Dreams from the LA Times. Its sequel, The Spoils: Selling the Future of American Basketball, premiered at the NBA Summer League Film Festival in June 2024 and was praised by filmmaker Ken Burns. Now available on Amazon Prime.
Bitcoin Season began on June 3, 2026, in San Clemente, California, led by Swan founder and CEO Cory Klippsten. A sneak peek at the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas on July 18.
