A new malware-as-a-service threat is targeting hundreds of banks around the world by giving cybercriminals the tools to steal credentials and control accounts.
According to the new advice from cybersecurity firm iZOO Logic, the threat was identified as a Telegram ad for a malware developer known as BankGhost Builder.
iZOO Logic claims that BankGhost Builder is advertised as a malware generator that enables malicious actors to create and deploy banking malware. The tool claims to support more than 700 banks, including institutions in India, North America, Europe and the Asia-Pacific region.
The advisory states that the malware builder offers the ability to attack endpoints, combining paid payloads, phishing tools and identity theft into a single criminal activity.
The platform is marketed as a malware-as-a-service tool, a model that allows threat actors to rent or buy access to malware.
According to iZOO Logic, BankGhost Builder is designed to help attackers target international banks and increase the number of thefts, frauds and attempted account hijackings. The company said the threat shows how cybercriminal tools are installed and advertised to make banking attacks easier to launch.
The company said financial institutions need to monitor suspicious activity, data harvesting and fraud campaigns linked to cybercriminals emerging from banks.
iZOO Logic also claims that the BankGhost Builder feature shows the continued use of malware-as-a-service against banks and their customers.
