In short
- Fear banned AI-generated art, music, and text from its Playdate handheld console catalog store.
- The company will continue to allow AI authoring tools such as GitHub Copilot with important disclosures.
- The policy change followed controversy over the release of games that use ChatGPT.
Fear, developer of Playdate mobile games, announced the ban on AI-generated art, music, and documentaries from its digital storefront while maintaining a commitment to AI-driven creative tools.
This framework makes a clear distinction between creative and technical AI applications. Panic’s revised statement now prohibits the provision of third-party games that contain AI-generated content, while developers who use AI code must disclose how it is used in customer service.
“Playdate Catalog has always required the AI work to be displayed by the game developer of each game, that role has not changed. But starting this month, the Playdate Catalog storefront is now banning AI-generated artwork, music, and text from any content in the game going forward,” Panic co-founder Cabel Sasser said in a statement. Game Maker.
The company has positioned itself as a pioneer in game distribution, setting its unique console—with a black-and-white screen, handheld, and a library of indie-centric games—apart from the gaming industry’s juggernauts.
“We believe that we are one of the first (and maybe the only?) digital game stores to do this. Air, Nintendo eShop, PlayStation Store, even Itch, etc. They all still allow this type of work created by AI in their lists,” Sasser said, adding that the move was” an important step to take the quality of games and our community.
The policy change came to light after Wheelsprung, a game that was included in Playdate’s Season 2 ranking, was found to have used ChatGPT and GitHub Copilot to support scripting.
Sasser agreed to supervise, and report Exp last year that the Fear group did not consider that Season 2 programs will use large examples of languages. They called this idea “absurd,” and took responsibility for the game passing their review.
Playdate was launched in 2022 as a home gaming device, leaning on its unique design and amazing features rather than competing with high-end mobile devices. Catalog stores for consoles serve as the primary distribution channel for games designed for a niche platform. Unlike major gaming platforms that have remained silent on AI products, Panic’s well-known strategy differentiates between different AI programs in game development—a first for the industry.
Fear has already set strict rules for upcoming collections. The publisher confirmed in post on Bluesky that Playdate Season 3 does not include any titles that are using AI of any kind.
“We can happily confirm that it was important to all Season 3 devs that no AI be used in the Season 3 gameplay,” the company said, clarifying that “this includes art, music, writing, and yes, code.”
