A Gallup poll shows that millions of Americans were victimized by thieves last year, resulting in billions in losses.
In the United States of Scams: A Report on the Financial and Emotional Fallout, Gallup he says that about 6% of US adults, or about 15.1 million Americans, lost money to scammers last year.
“Six percent of Americans are expected to have been defrauded by 2025, and fraud cost U.S. officials an estimated $68 billion — more than four times the times reported to federal authorities in FTC complaints in 2025.”
According to Gallup, nearly one in four Americans have been the victim of fraud at some point in their adult lives, and one in 10 have been defrauded more than once.
“Fraud attempts are ubiquitous: Nearly four in 10 (41%) Americans experience fraud every day.”
Of the victims, 46% said they experienced financial difficulties after being scammed, including 21% who said the difficulties they faced were serious.
“Low-income families are the most affected, with nearly six in 10 (58%) of these families saying the scam caused financial (28%) or social (30%) problems.”
Gallup also reports on the methods by which scammers contact victims.
“The issues that most people fell into fraud were buying things on the internet, making phone calls and chatting with people.
The study found that most gossip is reported to banks but less often to government agencies and law enforcement agencies.
