Up to $5,000 per Person Coming to Settlement of Data Breach Affecting 530,000 Individuals in Minnesota and Wisconsin


A pawn shop chain has agreed to pay millions of dollars to settle a lawsuit over a data breach that exposed customer information.

According to the Settlement Administrator’s portalPawn America, which owns pawn shops in Minnesota and Wisconsin, has agreed to pay $3.185 million to settle a lawsuit filed after thieves gained access to its network.

On or around September 28, 2021, the company’s network and affiliates met with a redemption that was obtained by Pawn America on October 3, 2021, according to the statement.

The company began notifying customers of the incident on November 19, 2021.

The breach affected at least 530,000 customers, exposing all their names, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, passport numbers, dates of birth and financial account information.

Members of the Settlement class are eligible to receive up to $5,000 for written losses incurred as a result of the data breach.

Without providing loss documents, claimants can receive $30, while California claimants can receive $50.

The total damages requested include nearly $1 million in attorneys’ fees.

The deadline to oppose the implementation is June 5. Applications must be submitted by July 6. The final court hearing on the matter is set for September 9.
