The US military has revealed that it is actively conducting a point on the Bitcoin network, a popular acceptance that brings the world’s largest blockchain closer to national security discussions.
Speaking before Congress, Admiral Samuel Paparo, commander of US forces in the Pacific, he said The government currently has a “policy on the Bitcoin network” and is used to test the work built to access and protect the network. He also made a point of drawing a line between participation in architecture and fantasy. “We are not mining Bitcoin,” Paparo said.
Bitcoin is being used as a cybersecurity tool, not a financial asset
Paparo’s words indicate that the soldiers are watching Bitcoin less as money and more as a technical system. In a separate congressional statement, he described the government’s research as looking at Bitcoin “as a tool for computer science,” specifically the combination of cryptography, blockchain infrastructure and proof of employment. He said these products have important functions in cyber security beyond the use of the economy.
The design is important. Running a node does not mean controlling the network or receiving block rewards. A Bitcoin node automatically authenticates and sends network data itself, helping to monitor transactions and ensure that the protocol is working as expected. Most of the Bitcoin network is maintained by thousands of nodes around the world, and its fragmentation is what prevents any party from controlling authentication.
Disclosure boosts Bitcoin’s role in Washington
The comments came in the wake of hearings about the US military’s Indo-Pacific situation, where lawmakers have also touched on the skills competition with China. Paparo said that Bitcoin is “peer-to-peer, the transfer of value” and said that everything that supports the power of the American world must be understood.
The immediate need is not that the Pentagon has become a Bitcoin buyer. It didn’t say that. The most interesting sign is that some parts of the US defense now seem ready to study the Bitcoin system as an infrastructure, not as a currency that lives outside the government’s systems.
