You Can Now Read the US Constitution via the Bitcoin Blockchain

The project was accomplished late Thursday when an anonymous Bitcoin user posted a copy of the document on the immutable blockchain, making it available on-chain for as long as the network has existed.

The 44.4 kilobyte transaction – worth the size of a Bitcoin – costs the user about $83.41 in transaction fees, according to blockchain explorer.

In comparison, other, simpler Bitcoin transactions at the same time-if the transfer is around 0.01 BTC– registered at only 227 bytes, or around 0.5% of its size as written. Even if you pay more than 105x, the transaction costs only $17, or about 20% of the Constitution.

The post was created using Bitcoin’s “OP_RETURN” feature, which allows users to add information to the transaction. In the past, the field was limited, but change last year removed the capthus resulting in greater enrollment.
